Carissa Brown

Carissa is passionate about all forms of natural healing, energy and its inter-dimensional power. She is of Maori descent and has practised many forms of healing through Massage / Mirimiri most of her life; aromatherapy, reflexology, Swedish massage, deep tissue, relaxation, sports massage, including Maori Healing, and the more ancient practice Kaha Ra Mirimiri, using hot stones and sound and working at a cellular level to help release and recalibrate cellular memory, releasing traumatic emotional triggers.

She is passionate about Meditation and its importance in everyday life, in staying balanced, centred and safe. Becoming an observer of her own innerness has been one of the biggest learnings and healings of her journey to date and is ongoing. The daily practice of meditation helped her find freedom from depression and PTSD. She feels honoured to have this opportunity to share this practice with others, to help them, as she helped herself, to remember how to be still, to be present, to be kind to oneself; knowing firsthand how powerful it is for people to understand this process for their own wellbeing and that of their families.

She has completed training in other methodologies of meditation — Transcendental Meditation, Beautiful State. So when the opportunity to become a part of the Mindfulness Works team, it absolutely felt 100% meant to be. She is really excited to have the opportunity to work with and share the freedom of nothingness, clarity, absolute LOVE, and did she say FREEDOM?

Carissa really looks forward to working with you, and sharing this gift of Mindfulness with you; trust her when she says it will change your life forever, if that is what you choose.

Lynne van Bilssen

Lynn  is a British trained cognitive behaviour therapist from 1979. When her professional organisation began promoting training workshops, she immediately signed up. She has done this for the last 12 years but prior to this, had the opportunity to complete a month-long course at Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal. The main focus, however, has always been teaching the 8-week Mindfulness Stress Reduction programme created by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, initially for pain management.

Lynne’s interest in mindfulness came through reading the work of Prof. Mark Williams who along with others, developed the use of mindful practice for severely depressed people. She has seen the benefits of this as a relapse prevention strategy in her own CBT practice.

Lynne returned to NZ five years ago and has continued using her CBT skills, firstly in community mental health in the Coromandel and more recently as a Health Improvement Practitioner at Invercargill Medical Centre.  Lynne also works privately as a CBT therapist.

Martin Wilson

Martin is the principal of and a personal/leadership coach with Selfmade Coaching and a graduate of Coach U Inc. He’s also been an associate for the Mental Health Foundation of NZ’s Working Well Programme as well as a director of the International Coach Federation Australasia Inc.

Previously, Martin was a commercial lawyer. Juggling being a busy lawyer, parent and an over-thinking, over-achieving self, contributed to Martin’s first ‘foray’ into meditation many years ago. He then developed a broader interest in mindfulness/self-awareness growth work, much of which he engages in as a coach. His principal meditation experience is from the Vipassana tradition and yet he is a keen explorer of other approaches.

Martin operates in a highly integrative way, ensuring mindfulness and coaching are not ends in themselves, but complementary ‘vehicles’ for negotiating successfully life and/or work changes or challenges and for growing as a person in a more self-aware, integrated way.

“I am so glad I did the course and would recommend it to everyone.” — Rosie Smith

What is Mindfulness and Meditation?

Mindfulness is a simple and practical way to learn to observe our thoughts, rather than be trapped by them and worrying about the past or the future.

Meditation is sitting formally, focusing on our breath or body sensations. As we do this we experience greater ease and freedom. In all Mindfulness Works courses we sit in chairs.

The Benefits of Mindfulness and Meditation

✅ Reduced stress, anxiety and worry

With practice and over time, mindfulness meditation can reduce the amount of stress and anxiety we experience.

✅ Better sleep

Experience better sleep with mindfulness meditation. The more relaxed we become, the easier it is to sleep.

✅ Greater self-acceptance and self-love

Mindfulness helps us realise we are perfectly OK just as we are, right here and right now.

✅ Healthier relationships through reduced reactivity

Rather than getting lost in a ‘fight or flight’ response when we feel annoyed, angry or threatened in our relationships, we have the tools to respond, rather than react.

✅ Greater feelings of joy and freedom

Mindfulness and meditation allows us to experience natural feelings of joy, calm and freedom.

✅ Increased self-awareness and emotional intelligence

Develop the wisdom and emotional intelligence to navigate life’s challenges in an easier, simpler and more rewarding way.

“Mindfulness has been shown to benefit our brains to such an extent that we can feel calmer, more aware, have an increased ability to focus and concentrate, remember things better and feel happier.” — NZ Mental Health Foundation Press Release July 2012

Experienced Mindfulness trainers

Mindfulness Works has experienced mindfulness trainers. All of them have also been vetted and trained by Mindfulness Works. Meet the trainers and find out more here.

Principles of Mindfulness Works mindfulness and meditation training

  • All mindfulness and meditation instructions and training are non-religious.
  • Emphasis is placed on trusting your own experience and all teachings are grounded in your own experience.
  • The most important teacher is yourself.
  • Training environments are kept safe.
  • Anyone is free to ask questions at any time.
  • Mindfulness and meditation are restorative practices more than remedial (they restore us to our natural feelings of okness and ease rather than ‘fix’ something that is wrong).
  • All formal teachers and facilitators have regular mindfulness and meditation practices.
  • Mindfulness must be actually practised to be useful (rather than just talked about).
  • All courses and retreats come with a money-back guarantee.

Keeping it real

If mindfulness and meditative practices have any value, it must be in our actual real life experience. Therefore, a strong emphasis in all Mindfulness Works courses and retreats is placed on your own experience. By relating the principles and practices back to your every-day interactions, relationships and life situations, it means that you get to actually ‘road test’ it. You can then start to become your own teacher more and more as you deepen in your understanding of how mindfulness works.  If there is ever a conflict between the formal teacher’s sharing and your own experience, the encouragement is to trust your own experience.

Providing extraordinary value

Mindfulness courses should not be prohibitive in terms of cost. They shoudl also give you as many resources as possible to encourage you in your mindfulness learning, experience and practice. Mindfulness Works is here to provide extraordinary value in our mindfulness courses.

  • Keeping the cost low.  You pay only $135 for a full Mindfulness Works introductory 4 week course.
  • You get a 45-page guidebook. You get an exclusive 45 page guidebook on mindfulness and meditation to keep
  • Downloadable/Streamable Mindfulness Meditations. You get free access to a variety of guided mindfulness meditations for you to keep for life.
  • No risk money back guarantee. We are committed to you receiving benefit form this course. If you attend all 4 classes of the course and feel you have not benefited, you are entitled to a full refund of your course fee. Plus you get to keep all your course materials.
