What is Mindfulness and Meditation?

Mindfulness is a simple and practical way to learn to observe our thoughts, rather than be trapped by them and worrying about the past or the future.

Meditation is sitting formally, focusing on our breath or body sensations. As we do this we experience greater ease and freedom. In all Mindfulness Works courses we sit in chairs.

The Benefits of Mindfulness and Meditation

✅ Reduced stress, anxiety and worry

With practice and over time, mindfulness meditation can reduce the amount of stress and anxiety we experience.

✅ Better sleep

Experience better sleep with mindfulness meditation. The more relaxed we become, the easier it is to sleep.

✅ Greater self-acceptance and self-love

Mindfulness helps us realise we are perfectly OK just as we are, right here and right now.

✅ Healthier relationships through reduced reactivity

Rather than getting lost in a ‘fight or flight’ response when we feel annoyed, angry or threatened in our relationships, we have the tools to respond, rather than react.

✅ Greater feelings of joy and freedom

Mindfulness and meditation allows us to experience natural feelings of joy, calm and freedom.

✅ Increased self-awareness and emotional intelligence

Develop the wisdom and emotional intelligence to navigate life’s challenges in an easier, simpler and more rewarding way.

“Mindfulness has been shown to benefit our brains to such an extent that we can feel calmer, more aware, have an increased ability to focus and concentrate, remember things better and feel happier.” — NZ Mental Health Foundation Press Release July 2012

Your Mindfulness & Meditation Teachers

Emily (Em) Kendall

Em K is an experienced and accomplished mindfulness meditation and yoga teacher. Born in the UK and raised in New Zealand, Em discovered meditation and yoga at a challenging time in her life, finding these practices transformative for her mental and physical well-being.

Em’s journey with meditation and yoga began as a means to manage anxiety, depression, and physical ailments. This then led her to explore other aspects, including breathwork and self-compassion techniques.
Em’s approach to teaching emphasises honesty and openness, encouraging students to embrace their imperfections and understand the power of mindfulness meditation in achieving balance and well-being. Her practice is grounded in extensive research, incorporating scientific findings on the benefits of mindfulness meditation and yoga for mental health, pain reduction, and overall wellness.

As a solo mum and a resilient individual, Em’s personal experiences have deeply informed her teaching style, focusing on connecting with oneself and harnessing inner strength. Her journey has taught her valuable tools for healing and self-awareness, which she passionately shares with her community in Hamilton.

Em’s commitment is to guide others in realising their potential for health, happiness, and fulfilment through the practice of mindfulness meditation and yoga.

Kayla Willis

Kayla found mindfulness and yoga many years ago at High School. Back then, she thought it was an excuse to wear patterned tights, nail fancy poses, and get a sweat on.

The truth of what yoga and mindfulness really is came to Kayla after she became a mother when overwhelm, exhaustion, and a touch of postpartum depression were at the forefront of her being. Through Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation, Kayla found significant emotional strength and resilience. The practices grounded her and highlighted that to take care of others started with taking care of herself.

Kayla has completed her formal education with a Bachelors of Sport Science and Human Performance, enriching her  knowledge and understanding of the body, brain, and fundamentals of human performance.

Integrative and complementary practices soon became my passion and Kayla now works from a more holistic model of health and wellbeing. Yoga and mindfulness is an integral part of this model. She furthered mher education starting with a 200 hour certification in Hatha Vinyasa Yoga, followed by a Pre & Postnatal Yoga Certification.

Kayla’s most recent certification is as a Subtle® Yoga Teacher (where slow, mindful practices balancing the Nervous System are the primary goal) holds the framework for much of how she teaches and lives at present.
